The Black Lives Matter movement, and recent discussion about memorials to white supremacy, have focused attention locally on the Gordon plaque in St Peter’s Church, Dorchester. John Gordon was a plantation owner involved in the bloody suppression of a slave revolt in Jamaica in 1760, which resulted in the deaths of almost 500 enslaved people. Rob Mott spoke to David Rhodes from Stand Up to Racism Dorset who says the plaque, being a commemoration of slavery and murder, is offensive and inappropriate and it should not remain on prominent display…
