Witness appeal following alleged assault in Weymouth

Detectives investigating an alleged assault in Weymouth are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward – with one man arrested.

The incident occurred at around 1.30pm on Friday 26 May 2023 in Dorchester Road near to Tesco Express in Upwey.

It is reported that two men – both aged in their 30s – were sitting in a van when they were approached by a man.

The man reportedly assaulted one of the men while they were inside the vehicle. He was taken to hospital for treatment to a serious head injury, which is not believed to be life-threatening.

The second man in the van subsequently got out of the vehicle and was allegedly assaulted, causing minor injuries.

Following enquiries, a 42-year-old man from the Dorchester area – who is known to the victims – was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and common assault. He has been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

Detective Sergeant Kim Williams, of Dorset County CID, said: “Our investigation is continuing and I would ask anyone who witnessed what happened to please come forward.

“Also, I am keen to speak to anyone who may have captured anything of relevance on either home CCTV or dashcam footage.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55230081022. Alternatively, independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously online at Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling Freephone 0800 555 111.
