Appeal for witnesses following alleged attempted robbery in Weymouth

Detectives investigating an alleged attempted robbery in Weymouth are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

The incident occurred at around 6.25pm on Tuesday 23 May 2023 on the beach under the Pier Bandstand off The Esplanade after the victim was approached by two men.

It is reported that one of them told the victim – a local man aged in his 40s – to give him his bag, which he refused to do so. He was subsequently reportedly assaulted, causing injuries to his face that required hospital treatment.

Following enquiries, a 35-year-old man from Bath was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and released on police bail while enquiries continue. The arrested man and the victim are known to each other.

Detective Constable Liam Moss, of Dorset County CID, said: “I am continuing to investigate this incident and would ask anyone who was in the area and may have seen what happened to please get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55230079320. Alternatively, independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously online at Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling Freephone 0800 555 111.
