Both Weymouth football and rugby clubs were denied their runouts on Saturday afternoon as the Bob Lucas Stadium’s pitch and the playing surface at Combe Down rugby club were both deemed dangerous and unplayable due to the frost so both fixtures will have to be re-scheduled.
OLAF Koszela’s seven-minute second half hat-trick helped Dorchester Town end their run of defeats at the hands of Merthyr Town and send their visitors back to the valleys with nothing to show for their efforts after scoring an emphatic 3-2 win at the Avenue Stadium.
The Welshman twice led through Thomas Handley and Alex John goals but, Koszela’s 7-minute treble, including a powerful volley, snatched all 3 points for the Magpies.
The result lifted the Magpies into 18th place and above of the drop zone.
One low note for Dorchester came after the half time whistle when the Magpies manager Tom Killick had an altercation with the match referee who brandished the dreaded red card at Killick and condemned him from the touchline for the remainder of the game

On Sunday Weymouth Football Club’s women’s team bowed out of the County Cup at the quarter final stage losing away at Sherborne by 3 goals to 1, the Terras goal coming from Emily Screen. The Terras’ women’s development team drew 3 all with Bournemouth Manor with Zara Hunt scoring a brace and Laura Seymour adding a third and also on Sunday the Dorset & Wilts Under 20 rugby squad beat Berkshire Under 20 by 17 points to 15 at Marlborough.
The only local Tribute League rugby match to go ahead was at Brewery Field where Bridport overcame the challenge of Oakmeadians beating their guests in a cliffhanger by 23 points to 20.
The Dorset & Wilts County Women’s Rugby management and coaching staff were overjoyed with the size of the turnout at Warminster rugby club for their first training session of the current season with a total of 50 players braving the cold to put themselves up for County selection, team manager Emma Santer said, “Last season we had 27 today we had 50 who braved the cold, but don’t worry if you couldn’t make the session Trial day 2 is on the 10th of February at North Dorset Rugby Club”.
