DocBike’s Santa Toy Run brings festive joy to children at Dorset County Hospital

A motorcycle ride out led by Dorset-based charity DocBike, has brought festive cheer to young patients staying in Kingfisher Ward at Dorset County Hospital on Christmas Day.
On Sunday 22nd December 2024, over 50 big-hearted bikers took part in DocBike’s brand-new ‘Santa Toy Run’ event, to donate special gifts to young patients unable to spend Christmas Day at home with their families.

Despite challenging weather conditions on the morning, the rain cleared just in time for the ride out to set off from The Churchill Arms in Alderholt at 11.30am, with bikers donning their best Christmas fancy dress outfits.

After completing the special 35-mile ride out, bikers were greeted with a warm welcome by staff from Kingfisher Ward, who gladly accepted their generously donated gifts for patients to open on Christmas Day.

Kingfisher Ward is Dorset County Hospital’s ward for children and young people aged 0 to 17 years and provides a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for young patients being cared for at the hospital. Staff at Kingfisher Ward adopt a philosophy of family-centred care, with each child/young person being cared for as an individual as well as being part of a family.

Speaking of the success of the event, Tanya Wynyard, DocBike Volunteer and Landlady at The Churchill Arms said:

“I am overjoyed with the amount of support that we received for DocBike’s first-ever Santa Toy Run, especially as the weather wasn’t on our side first thing that morning.

“I would like to say a huge thank you everyone who generously donated gifts, got involved, or helped to make the event possible. I would also like to extend our gratitude and to thank staff at Kingfisher Ward, for providing us with the opportunity to hold our new brand-new rideout for the biker community to enjoy.”

Commenting on the joy that the donated gifts brought to young patients, Emma Davies, Kingfisher Ward Manager at Dorset County Hospital said: “On behalf of Kingfisher ward, thank you so much for your generous donations. This kindness and support makes a meaningful difference to the children receiving care in hospital. We truly appreciate your contributions, and we loved seeing the joy and excitement this brought to them.”

The DocBike Charity receives no direct funding from the Government and relies on the generosity of the public to continue their life-saving work, which puts highly trained trauma doctors or critical care paramedics on two wheels, to reduce deaths and serious injuries on the UK’s roads due to motorcycle collisions.
