A man who admitted carrying out a burglary at a home in Wool has been jailed.
Jamie Andrew Dickson-Smith, aged 41 and of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Wednesday 14 November 2018 after he admitted committing the offence on Friday 28 September 2018.
He was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.
At around 10.40am the victim, a woman aged in her 70s, was at her home in the village when she was startled by the defendant appearing from the dining room area.
She challenged him and Dickson-Smith claimed he was looking for some electrical tape to fix the exhaust on his car.
The woman sent him out of her property and watched him walk away. Once back inside she found that her leather purse, which contained £65 in cash as well as stamps and vouchers, was missing.
She got in her car and drove around the area in a bid to locate the offender and found Dickson-Smith a short distance away. The victim demanded that he empty his pockets, which he did and produced a number of bank notes that he claimed were his.
Dickson-Smith gave a false name and a registration number for his car and the victim went off looking for the vehicle. When she was in the area of Wool train station a short time later she saw the defendant again and he ran off.
Dickson-Smith handed himself in to police the following day and was arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Detective Constable Charlie Soutine, of Weymouth CID, said: “We recognise the impact burglaries such as this can have on victims, with the offences occurring in the very place they should feel safe and secure.
“Dorset Police is committed to bringing burglars such as Dickson-Smith to justice and I hope the sentence imposed shows that offences such as these will be dealt with firmly by the courts.”
