Updated: Dorchester’s Heritage Open Day 2020

As many will know, Dorchester’s very popular traditional Heritage Open Day had to be put on hold until next year as a physical, hands-on event. In 2019 the event attracted thousands of visitors to the town and was a great success. Covid has put a temporary stop to that, so LoveDorch and Dorchester Heritage staged online events to compensate. Merchant Navy Day celebrated at County Hall

The annual Merchant Navy Day flag raising ceremony took place outside County Hall in Dorchester on 3rd September. Several civic and local dignatories attended the event along with members of Weymouth & Portland Merchant Navy / Royal Naval Associations and Weymouth Sea Cadets. The recording begins with an introduction from the Chair of Dorset Council, Cllr Pauline Batstone, who also read a message HRH The Earl of Wessex. Then followed an address by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset, Mr Angus Cambell, and next Captain Paul Compton, Branch Chairman of Merchant Navy Association. VJ Day 75 in Dorchester

KeeP 106 commemorated this important occasion on 15th August by inviting listeners to observe two minutes silence at 11 o’clock and later broadcasting part of the Service of Remembrance which was held next to the Kohima Memorial outside the Dorset Council offices at County Hall in Dorchester. Commonwealth Day ceremony at County Hall

Monday 9th of March, was Commonwealth Day and a flag raising ceremony was held outside County Hall in Dorchester. The ceremony included the Commonwealth Affirmation plus a message from Her Majesty the Queen and another from the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, The Right Honourable Patricia Scotland. Children from St Mary’s Catholic First School attended and joined in with the response to the affirmation.
