A LIFT in Dorchester’s Corn Exchange building could be replaced – after people became stuck in it and because of rising maintenance costs.
On one occasion the fire brigade had to be called to rescue two occupants who were safe, but unable to get out.
The lift was installed in 2010 and, according to a report by deputy town clerk, Steve Newman, has become increasingly unreliable.
He says that over the past few years the reliability of the lift has become poor with various components failing – despite regular services.
In the past year over £4,500 has been spent on service and repair alone.
Town council officers are now exploring whether there are any ways of making the lift more reliable and whether there are any alternatives to having the lift – including a stair lift.
