This year, The Great British Spring clean campaign, which runs from March 22nd to April 23rd, will see up to half a million people taking action to clean up streets, parks and beaches across the country.
The Great British Spring Clean brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to the environment on our doorstep and in 2018 around 370,000 #LitterHeroes collected more than 630,000 bags of rubbish.
Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: “The Great British Spring Clean is an opportunity for the millions of people who care about the environment on their doorstep to do something positive that will make a visible difference.”
See/hear this edition of Local World which features an interview with Allison Ogden-Newton plus an item on the issues surrounding plastic waste from packaging.
Community groups across Dorset are rolling up their sleeves and litter picking in mass.
Sophie from Litter Free Dorset said: “If you only have 5 minutes, don’t panic, a mini spring clean is just as impactful.
– Take part in a 2-minute spring clean on your street – Take a bag with you when you’re walking the dog – Or how about trying a ‘plog’ (picking up litter whilst you jog)? – See a piece of litter, pick it up! I’m sure at least one person that sees you will be influenced in some way.”
A staggering four in five Brits (84%) admit the cleanliness of their community has a significant impact on their emotional wellbeing. By taking part in sprucing up your street you will be creating smiles inside and out.
Litter Free Dorset are supporting community groups across the county to clean up the countryside. If you would like to join a group head over to the website for details of a group near you.
The Dorset Waste Partnership is also supporting the campaign by providing guidance and equipment for litter-picks.
