Washed up object leads to beach closure

Police in Weymouth have placed a cordon on the Esplanade and closed of a section of the beach after an unknown object was washed up.

The cordon was put in place shortly after 8 this morning after the item was located. Roads were unaffected.

Dorset Police received reports that a suspicious item was found on Tuesday (12th May) but the object could not be located at the time. A search resumed this morning and officers found the object at 8am. Police were in communication with an explosive ordnance disposal team during the initial searches.

The army arrived shortly after 11am to inspect and they removed a small item from the beach.

The cordon has now been lifted.

Fiona Lawrence, from Weymouth, witnessed the event and told KeeP 106:
“The way police dealt with the incident was excellent – keeping the public away and the incident was dealt with fairly quickly”.
