Speaking of Loneliness

Loneliness is a very current problem for millions of people in this country, a situation made worse by the pandemic. It is an emotive subject which touches many people through family, friends, or communities.

Ben Sloyan, a young member of the Dorchester based Casterbridge Speakers Club, gave an impassioned presentation about loneliness at the Toastmasters International speech contest. This touched not just the audience but the judges as well. He went on to win the contest and will be representing the South West at the National finals in May. A win there will qualify him to take part in the World Championships.

Citing the research on the impact of voice activated devices in reducing loneliness of elderly people in care homes, he called on the audience to consider donating a device to someone who is lonely, to give them a voice, a companion and the dignity not to have to ask another person to do the most menial of tasks, like turn on the lights.  For the price of a good meal (when we could go out for one!), he explained how it can make a huge difference to someone’s life.

Ben puts his success down to the support and learning he has gained from being part of a Toastmasters International Club and looks forward with pride to representing the area in the finals.

Since the first lockdown last March, all club meetings have gone on-line, and this has enabled people to learn how to present virtually. Casterbridge Speakers is holding a free open night on April 14th on Mastering Digital Communications. Ben and other experienced members of the Club will take part in a panel discussion for guests to ask questions on this topic in a fun and friendly environment. Non-members are very welcome and are encouraged to join the virtual meeting with a colleague or friend, so as not to feel alone.
