Yacht taking on water escorted to safety

Weymouth RNLI all-weather lifeboat was launched at 5.26pm on Tuesday 31st August to go to the aid of a vessel taking on water.

Solent Coastguard received a Pan Pan radio message from a 37’ racing yacht stating that they were in a position 2 miles South West of the West Shambles buoy and were taking on water, with the bilge pumps barely coping.

The lifeboat arrived on scene at 6.03pm to find that the 2 persons on the yacht had managed to slow the ingress of water and that the bilge pumps were holding their own.

With the flow of water under control, the lifeboat escorted the yacht to the Chequered Fort entrance to Portland Harbour where the yacht was left to make its own way to Portland Marina for further investigation into the leak.

The lifeboat returned to station at 7.20pm where it was refuelled and made ready for the next shout.
