A scrambled goal in second half overtime from Akheem Rose against Welling at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday helped to erase the nightmare of last Tuesday evening’s 5 goals to 2 defeat at the hands of fellow National League South strugglers Hungerford.
In the 28th minute of the game Welling were down to 10 men after Kassarate was shown the red card for a reckless challenge.
There being no score at half time the Terras took the lead from Brad Ash in the 53rd minute only for the visitors to draw level after 83 minutes of the game had elapsed .
Going into overtime the ball came over from a corner, it fell to Ash who had his shot cleared off the line for Rose who earlier had a penalty kick saved latched onto the loose ball and buried into the back of the Welling net.
Our correspondent at the game said, “A good result for Weymouth overall and deserved, the Terras left it very late despite having a man advantage for an hour, but in the end a win is a win and 3 welcome league points”
In the Southern League Dorchester suffered another reverse losing 4 goals to nil at Hayes & Yeading.
Striker Shaq Gwengwe had a strong penalty shout denied when the Magpies were trailing 1 nil.
Portland United continued their run a form winning 2 goals to 1 at Fareham, Greg Borthwick and Brin Doyle netting for the blues, while in the Southwest Peninsular League East Bridport lost at St Mary’s 1 nil to visitors Oakhampton Argyle.
In the local rugby Dorchester ended their Tribute Southern Counties League season losing by 24 points to 19 at Yeovil finishing in 4th place in the division and Swanage & Wareham also recorded a loss at Bestwall against visitors Walcot ending their season two places behind Dorchester in 6th place, Blandford failed to raise a team to travel to Frome.
Weymouth & Portland rugby club now know who they will meet in the final promotion play off game next Saturday.
The Seahorses must travel to Chippenham to play the Wiltshire club’s second team.
