The Weymouth Land Train took its first trip of the season on Saturday 1st April 2023. The Mayor of Weymouth Cllr Ann Weaving and her escort Cllr Ken Whatley joined a band of local businesses and families for a tour around the esplanade, harbour, and Hope Square.
Tony Poole, owner of the Land Train said: “The Weymouth Land Train is the absolute best way to discover Weymouth and provides lots of fun for all ages. The kids really like having their photo taken in the driving seat of the train too. The train will run every day now until September providing a circular route from the seafront to Hope Square, many people hop off at Hope Square for the Nothe Fort & Gardens and then hop back on the train when they are ready to return to the seafront. This year for the first time in a long while, the train will be travelling along the Esplanade during June, July, and August providing a transport link between car parks at Lodmoor and the town centre”.
The land train was reintroduced to Weymouth in 2021 as the country emerged from the Covid pandemic when Mr Poole purchased the land train from Merlin Entertainments. Weymouth and Dorset Councils have granted a licence this year to enable the train to run again along the esplanade from opposite the Gloucester Bars to the Sea Life Centre as it can now operate using a greener fuel source instead of regular diesel. This useful transport link is a favourite with tired families returning from Weymouth beach to the car parks at Lodmoor and those visiting the Sea Life Centre. The route will operate in the mornings and afternoons only.
