Protect our pond

In the most recent Countryside e-newsletter from Dorset Council comes information about the current restoration project at Rushy Pond at Thorncombe Wood near Dorchester.

Firstly, volunteers have been looking into writings of Thomas Hardy (1840- 1928) to explore the relationship between the pond and the writer, and the landscape he grew up in. Secondly, Rangers have also been looking into the pond’s food chain. Did you know that flea and tick treatments for dogs can pollute water bodies, having a damaging effect on the invertebrate populations? With this knowledge, dog owners are asked to check their flea/tick treatment information to see if it can affect aquatic life.

Read about the ‘spot-on’ treatment research

The e-newsletter also features

  • Swanage Down Local Nature Reserve launch, about a new local nature reserve which has been created at Peveril Point and the Downs in Swanage
  • Fantastic Footpath about a popular footpath with the local community has been given some new steps which take footpath s1/157 up a slope into the local countryside around the Preston area of Weymouth.

Plus much more and is a good read.
