Weekend Sport Report

Weymouth & Portland Rugby Club’s senior men’s team proved all the pundits who were forecasting a heavy defeat in their first game, in the Tribute Southern Counties league away against Avonvale, wrong and returned from Bath with 4 league points in the bank.

Result: Avonvale 21 v Weymouth & Portland 23.

James Baker landed 3 penalty kicks for the Seahorses and converted Louis Allan’s try.

The referee awarded the visitors a penalty try after Vale’s winger was adjudged to have encroached from an offside position to prevent Weymouth & Portland touching down.

Man of the Match Andy Bowditch.

Result: Dorchester 13 v Swanage & Wareham 38.

It was very much a game of 2 halves, the County Town were leading by 10, points to 5 at the break, but as the match progressed the Swans upped their game whilst Dorchester appeared to wilt in the late summer sunshine and at the death the visitors were in almost total control.

Local Football.

National League South.

Result: Weymouth 2 v Maidstone 3.

Part time Weymouth came up against full time Maidstone and despite leading the game twice the Terras went down to a late goal at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Our Man at the Match said, “Maidstone being full time it certainly showed in the final half hour and in particular the 8 minutes of added on time. We had a good shout for penalty when the ball appeared to strike a Maidstone player’s hand, but the referee waved play on. To take the lead twice against a full-time outfit was great, but in the end the difference in fittness between full and part time players made all the difference”.

The Terras’ goals came from Charlie Rowan and Ben Thomson.

FA Cup 1st Preliminary Round.

Result: Plymouth Parkway 2 v Dorchester 0.

Not much to say about this one, Shaq Gwengwe went close twice for the Magpies, firstly when put through on goal by Leighton Thomas and secondly with a close in header, but it’s Parkway who go into next week’s FA Cup draw.

Wessex League.

Result: Brockenhurst 3 v Portland United 2.

The Blues came close to returning to Dorset with a point as the score at halftime was 2 -2 but conceded again in the second half and returned home with nothing to show for all of their efforts.

Portland’s goals came from Ben Morris and Greg Borthwick.

South Peninsular League East.

Result: Dartmouth 2 v Bridport 4.

Soloman Ayunga grabbed 2 goals for the Bees with a goal each coming from Tom Richardson and Mike Mamanta.
