The Town Crier of Dorchester, and the current mayor, has announced that he is to retire from town crier duties and will be delivering his final cry at the Town Pump on New Year’s Eve.
Popular local personality Alistair Chisholm has been Dorchester Town Crier for no less than 27 years and has been Champion UK Town Crier 11 times, equalling a previous record set by the town crier of Fowey in Cornwall.
Dorchester Town Council will be holding auditions for the next town crier in due course and Alistair is hoping the tradition will be passed on to an equally enthusiastic younger person, either male or female.
Alistair will be delivering his final cry at around midnight on New Year’s Eve at the Town Pump in Cornhill, where revellers have traditionally welcomed in the new year for decades.
Alistair is a prominent member of STAND (Save The Area North of Dorchester) which opposes the proposed development of over 4,000 houses on land to the north of the county town, a sensitive landscape.
At the end of his term of office as mayor Alistair will stand down as a local councillor.
