UPDATED: Nurdling at Upwey changes to New Year’s Day

Our sports reporter Idris Martin reports that the annual Nurdling tradition takes place on the Old Roman Road in Upwey at around 11:00 am near the Ship Inn. It was to have been held on Boxing Day but has been put back to New Year’s Day when two teams, Red and Blue, attempt to out-nurdle each other. The rules are somewhat fogged in the passage of time, but local builder Dave Squibb will be there to keep order over the proceedings.

There are claims this game is so ancient it dates to pre-Roman Britain. There are references to it being played as far back as 1602 in Cornwall. Another account says it was also played in Dorset in 1583.
