One of Weymouth & Portland Rugby Club’s prodigal sons returned from distant lands to support the Seahorses from the touchline at Sherborne Rugby Club on Saturday afternoon.
Mick Caulfield turned out for Weymouth from 1966 until Mick and his wife Pat emigrated to Perth Western Australia in 1991.
Mick said, “It’s difficult getting used to the temperature back here, in Perth when we left it was over 30 degrees”.
Rugby is in the Caufield genes, Mick and Pat’s son Jonathon represented the Wallabies under 18 team and played against the touring Junior All Blacks and he found himself up against the legend that was Jonah Lomu.
Mick resumed acquaintances with his former Weymouth and Dorset & Wilts County teammates Barry Ross Mackenzie and Hughie Mason.
Unfortunately, despite Mick and Pat’s support the result went in favor of the home side who beat the Seahorses by 31 points to 7.
In the local football Weymouth travelled to Tonbridge Angels for a National League South game and returned on the wrong side of a 2 goals to 1 scoreline.
The Angels took the lead in the 35th minute for Tom Bearwish to put the visitors level 7 minutes later, but in the 72nd minute Tonbridge netted again and with there being no further scoring its back to the chalk board for manager Bobby Wilkinson’s men.
Our Man at the Match said. “We keep getting all of these strikers in, but none of them seem to be able to find the back of the net. We were the better team in the second half, but failed to test their keeper. However all of the teams around us in the league table didn’t do mush better so there wasn’t much damage done. Look forwards to next week at home against Slough”.
Dorchester hosted Hungerford at the Avenue Stadium and at one stage trailed 3 goals to nil before debutant Harvey Hughes pulled one back for the Magpies, then with 90 minutes on the watch the Crusaders scored again to put the result beyond doubt.
