Attempted robbery in Weymouth by man wielding kitchen knife

Detectives investigating a report of an attempted knifepoint robbery in Weymouth are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

It was reported that a woman aged in her 40s was in her vehicle on Wooperton Street at around 8.25pm on Thursday 1 February 2024 when a man approached her and allegedly produced a kitchen knife before demanding money and her purse.

The woman reportedly closed the car window and kept the doors locked and the man returned to a nearby address.

Officers attended and, following enquiries, a 40-year-old Weymouth man was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. He has been released on police bail as further enquiries are carried out.

The arrested man and the woman involved are reported to be known to each other.

Detective Sergeant Rich Barnett, of Dorset County CID, said: “We are continuing to make enquiries into this incident, and I am appealing to any witnesses or anyone with information that might assist our enquiries to please make contact with us.

“I would also urge motorists with dashcam who were in the area on the evening of Thursday 1 February 2024, as well as residents with home CCTV systems or doorbell cameras, to please check their footage to see if they have captured anything of relevance.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55240016784. Alternatively, independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously online at Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling Freephone 0800 555 111.
