Weekend Sports Report

Local Football Report, FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round:

Portland United 0 vs Hamworthy Recreation 2.

The Blue’s flirtation with the FA Cup this season lasted just 90 minutes at Grove Corner, but manager Kyle Critchell said afterwards, ” I have no qualms with the outcome. Hamworthy are a good side; maybe we showed them a little too much respect”.

“We put them under pressure in the first 20 minutes of the game, but we failed to score. There were some positives to take away from the game, but on the day, they were better than us, and I wished them good luck in the next round.”

Southwest Peninsular League East, result:

Bridport 0 vs Teignmouth 2.

The game was still goalless as the halftime break approached, but with only their second attack, Teignmouth took the lead when Piers MacLauchlan latched on to the loose ball and rammed it home from close range.

Bridport went further behind early in the second half after a long ball cannoned off of a defender’s head and went out for a corner; the ball came over, and Hayden Roe buried it into the back of the home net to make the score 2-0 to the visitors.

For the remainder of the game, the Bees threw everything into attack; however, despite going close on a couple of occasions, they failed to break their duck.

Pre-Season Friendly:

Weymouth 0 vs Dorchester 2

Not the result that the Terras desired in this local Derby, but on the day the Magpies deserved their victory.

Our Man at the Match said: “Weymouth were second to everything. All credit to Dorchester. They built from the back, passed the ball very well and seemed to control the middle of the park, with Jordan Ngalo and veteran Wes Fogden both in fine form.”

Ngalo opened the Magpie’s account with a drive from 25 meters out that flew into the top left corner of the Terra’s net. Then, late in the second half, from a corner, new loan signing from Bournemouth goalkeeper Billy Terrell managed to keep the first shot out, but Dorchester striker Olaf Koszela was first to react drove the ball high into the net for the Magpies, second.

Terrell had a good debut and made some fine saves, one in particular late in the game to keep the margin down to 2, but he could do little to prevent either of the Magpie’s goals.

Goalkeeper Billy Terreli, signed on a year loan from Bournemouth, made a fine debut for the Terras.

After the game, Weymouth manager Mark Molesley said, “We are disappointed with the result, and we have lessons to learn. The performance leaves us with more questions than answers, and it was pretty obvious that one team is ready for league football and one team is still in pre-season.”
