Calls to Dorset Council to clean up an algae-hit lake have been answered, as contractors have begun removing the slime into a skip.
Authorities said earlier that they were going to clear the algae from Radipole Lake, formerly known as the Weymouth Backwater, which has been covered in the green film for some time.
Algae grow in hot weather and combine with nutrients in the water that washes off the fields and flows down the River Wey into the lake to grow in such large proportions.
This year, the swans that reside in the area and are fed by local people are unusually absent. Dead seabirds have been seen floating on top of the water enveloped in the green slime and judging by the amount of algae floating on top of the water, removing it is not going to be a quick fix.
