Weekend Sports Report

None of our 4 top local football teams could muster up a victory between them on Saturday. The very best they could provide was at the New Cuthbury, where Dorchester, despite ending the game with only 9 players out on the park, came from behind to salvage a Southern Premier League point against Wimborne.

In the clash of the Magpies, Wimborne took the lead in the 7th minute, which they held until half-time.

Dorchester’s Thomas Bragg received his marching orders in the 55th minute, and then second-half sub-Wes Fogden equalized for the visitors 5 minutes later.

With 3 minutes of the 90 left on the referee’s time-piece, Will Spetch was the next to depart, leaving Dorchester to see out the game minus 2 of their outfield players.

The player that Dorchester fans had to salute was their goalkeeper, Gerard Benfield, who saved a penalty.

Wes Fogden

Wes Fogden scored Dorchester’s equaliser.

Weymouth hosted Tonbridge Angels at the Bob Lucas Stadium under the guidance of their interim manager, Jason Matthews, who replaced Mark Molesley in midweek. Still, the change in management couldn’t provide the Terras with what they desired, most of the 3 National League South points, as Weymouth went down by a goal to nil.

Our Man at the Match said: “It was a game between two even teams. The Tonbridge goal was fluked in off of a Terras’ defender into the goal, and that was the only difference between the two teams”.

“Weymouth had a good shout for a penalty, but the referee didn’t agree. Every Weymouth player put in a shift, but they were just unlucky, not at least to get a draw”.

Portland United travelled into Wiltshire to play Downton and returned to Dorset with nothing to show for exploits, losing the Wessex Premier League match by 3 goals to 2.

Pat Jenkins and Brinley Doyle scored the Blues’ goals.

Bridport travelled to Newquay for a Southwest Peninsular League Cup tie.

However, the journey didn’t turn out too well for the Bees, who lost the game by 4 goals to nil.

In the local Tribute Rugby Leagues, Dorchester beat visitors Corsham by 33 points to 22. Swanage & Wareham overcame the challenge of Walcot at Bestwall, beating their guests by 36 points to 10.

Weymouth & Portland came up against an in-form Oakmeadians side and lost out at Monmouth Avenue, beaten by 29 points to 12, Bridport fought out a close encounter at Brewery Field against Swanage & Wareham second team with the Swans returning the Bestwall following their 21 points to 17 victory and Puddletown were awarded a Home Walk Over Blandford who failed to raise a team to travel to Greenfields.
