Alfie Chambers, aged 21 and previously of Aldershot, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Monday 2 December 2024 to three years in prison after admitting causing grievous bodily harm with intent, criminal damage and possession of a knife blade or sharp pointed article in a public place.
At around 3am on Wednesday 7 December 2022, the window of a vehicle on Western Road was smashed.
A male member of the public subsequently heard further banging and smashing coming from car park of Asda in Newstead Road believed to be caused by a man – later identified as Chambers – and a woman.
The man confronted the pair and asked them what they were doing.
Chambers pulled a machete out from the back of his trousers and threatened the victim, who tried to leave the area.
The defendant attempted to hit the victim with the machete, who sustained an injury to his arm when he tried to protect himself.
The victim managed to seek help from a member of the public and the incident was reported to police.
Following a search of the area, Chambers was arrested and subsequently charged.
Detective Constable Donna Taylor, of Dorset County CID, said: “This was a terrifying assault that left the victim fearing for his life.
“I am pleased that we were able to apprehend Chambers and ensure he faced justice for his actions.
“There is no excuse for the violence he displayed during this incident and I would like to thank the victim for his support throughout the investigation.”
A 21-year-old woman from Weymouth was also arrested in connection with this incident and charged with possessing a knife blade or sharp pointed article in a public place. She pleaded guilty to the offence at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 15 May 2024 and was handed an 18-month community order.
