Weekend Sports Preview

Weymouth Football Club’s latest managerial signing, former Bournemouth and Northern Ireland international player Warren Feeney, takes his new charges to the Melbourne Stadium to meet National Leagues South opposition Chelmsford City on Saturday.

The Clarets are currently in mid-table 15th place in the table with a record of played 20, won 6 with 25 points, but the Terras prop up the rest of the teams in the league rock bottom in 24th place, also playing 20, winning 2 with 12 points.

A Weymouth club press statement includes this paragraph,

“Our primary mission is to remain in the National League South, and the board will support Warren in every possible way to achieve this goal. Looking beyond survival, our medium-term objective is for Weymouth Football Club to compete again for league titles and push for promotion”.

In the Southern Premier League, Dorchester, currently 5th in the league table, hosts Tiverton Town at the Avenue Stadium, and the Magpies must start this one as favourites to collect all 3 league points against the team in the 19th place and inside the drop zone.

Portland United will visit Sherborne for a Wessex Premier League fixture, and Bridport travel to Honiton for a Southwest Peninsular League East game.

The Bees’ reserves entertain Cobham Sports at St Mary’s Fields for a Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance Trophy tie, with the game kicking off at 1:30 pm.

In the local Tribute Rugby Leagues, Dorchester are on route to Devizes, Swanage & Wareham also travel into Wiltshire to lock horns with Royal Wootton Bassett’s second team, both of those matches are in the Southern Counties Division, while in the Dorset & Wilts Leagues, Blandford host North Dorset second team and Bridport meet Puddletown for a Derby clash at Brewery Fields.

Weymouth & Portland have no fixtures until the new year.

The ‘Blasts from the Past’ on Idris Martin’s website this week include:

Football Pictures, Chickerell vs Wincanton & Chickerell Res vs Upwey & Broadwey.

Rugby Pictures, England vs Wales and the Weymouth Christmas Day Harbour Swim.

Plus, a player visiting the Bob Lucas Stadium cops one in the orchestra stalls, painful to say the least.??
