Building on the success of previous hugely popular events, the Family Science Day will be taking place again at the Dorset Museum & Art Gallery on Sunday the 16th March from 11am-1pm & 2pm-4pm. This free (but ticketed) activity is sure to bring out the Marie Curie or the Albert Einstein in you!
Aimed at children aged 4 plus, but with something for people of all ages to enjoy, Family Science Day will include over 20 different stalls from a range of scientific disciplines to allow you to get involved in some fantastic hands-on learning and experiments.
There will be a great range of activities, hosted by local scientists, allowing you to try all sorts of investigations – find out how physics plays a part in everyday life, discover the invisible world of microbes, explore the biodiversity of the natural world, discover how magnets and gravity work, test your knowledge of water systems, fossils and seaweed and even handle a 205 million year old meteorite!
Entrance is strictly by ticket only, obtainable from the Dorset Museum & Art Gallery website.
Family Science Day has again spread its wings to work with some local amazing partners to offer a jam-packed activities programme as part of the Dorchester Science Festival, which will take place over 10 days from the 7th-16th March. Others hosting brilliant events as part of the week include Dorchester Arts, Dorchester Library and Learning Centre, Cape Farewell, Dorset County Hospital, Dorset Wildlife Trust, the Wessex Astronomy Club, and Sculpture by the Lakes. The offer this year includes activities suitable for people aged 0-infinity!
We’ve also organised a free talk on Astrophotography: ‘Capturing the Cosmos and Advancing Science’ where you can discover how astrophotography blends art, science and technology to reveal the wonders of the universe—and how amateurs are making real scientific contributions.
A new addition to this year’s programme is the ‘Sensory Safe Science Day’ set up following feedback at previous Family Science Days that some children found the large event somewhat overwhelming. This drop in event is being held at Borough Gardens House on Saturday 15th March from 10.30am-12.30am and 1.30pm-2.30pm and will offer interactive science activities, especially aimed at children who are neurodivergent or who might prefer a quieter environment.
For full information about everything happening, check out the Dorchester Science Festival Facebook page and look up our events, or grab a programme from a number of locations around town including the Dorchester Library and Learning Centre, Waterstones, Dorset Museum & Art Gallery, and the Town Council offices.
