In their latest newsletter Public Health Dorset suggest seven ways to benefit your baby’s development, as well as advice about safer sleep for babies.
When your baby is very small, you might feel self-conscious talking to them because they can’t reply. You might prefer to sing songs or rhymes to your baby instead.
Some of the benefits are:
- They get to learn new words
- It helps them recognise the sounds in words
- The rhythm helps them understand more words
- When you sing with actions it boosts fine and gross motor skills
- They develop other skills like maths when rhymes include counting
- It helps them understand key emotions
- Makes the bond between you and your child stronger

Learn about safer sleep for babies
Babies spend most of their first year of life sleeping. This is a precious time for all, and to make sure every sleep is a safe one, it’s important to follow expert advice until your baby is 12 months old.
A baby’s sleep can be impacted by their position, the room temperature, a messy cot, breastfeeding, room sharing and co-sleeping. Safer sleep advice should be applied to every sleep, whether that’s night and day, cot and pram, quick nap and night-time sleep.
The Lullaby Trust aims to raise awareness of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and creating a safer sleep environment for babies.
