11th April – the deadline to apply for VE Day Street party road closure

The UK will mark the historic 80th anniversary of VE Day with families and communities coming together to celebrate 80 years since the end of World War II in Europe, 5-8 May.

Street parties, picnics, and barbecues will be held across the country on Monday 5 May, the Spring Bank Holiday, when millions across the UK are expected to join in the “Great British Food Festival” to celebrate 80 years of peace.

Dorset Council is encouraging communities to host their own street or home celebrations – with flags and bunting, games, fancy dress, music and dance.

If you want to host a street party, you can apply for a road closure online.  Temporary traffic restrictions for a street party – Dorset Council.  It’s free, but you need to apply by 11 April.

You could also consider hosting a Street Meet which typically takes place on a driveway, parking area, or front garden as it’s private land or at the end of a cul-de-sac, wide pavement or grass verge.

You can do this without letting us know.

The official 80th anniversary website offers a wealth of tips and inspiration for party planners including The Big Lunch Guide to Bringing People Together, ideas for food, games and activities, quiz sheets and templates for home-made bunting, flags, posters and party invitations.

Town and Parish Councils across Dorset will also be organising their own events, so check your local information sites to see what’s happening near you.

Cllr Ryan Hope, Portfolio Holder for Customer, Culture and Community Engagement at Dorset Council said:

“The 80th anniversaries of VE Day give us a chance to come together and honour the sacrifices made by many during the war. Whether by attending a local event, hosting a street party, or sharing stories from the past, we encourage everyone in Dorset to take part in commemorations and celebrations.”
