Teenage cyclist airlifted to hospital with life-changing injuries after collision with van in Weymouth

Police officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward following a road traffic collision in Weymouth that left a teenage cyclist with serious injuries.

Dorset Police received a report at 5.26pm on Thursday 10 April 2025 of a road traffic collision involving a van and a cyclist on The Esplanade, near to the Jubilee Clock Tower.

The cyclist – a teenage boy – was taken to hospital by air ambulance for treatment to life-changing injuries. He remains in hospital and his family has been made aware.

Following initial enquiries at the scene, a man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and driving offences. He has been released under investigation as further enquiries are carried out to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

Road closures were put in place as emergency services responded to the incident and enquiries were carried out at the scene.

Detective Constable Matt Barrett, of Dorset County CID, said: “We are carrying out a thorough investigation to establish the full circumstances of this incident and I am keen to hear from anyone with information that might assist our enquiries.

“We understand there were a number of people in the area at the time and I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision, or the moments leading up to it, to please get in touch if you have not already spoken to police.

“I am also keen to hear from anyone who may have captured relevant dashcam footage.

“Finally, we would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding during the road closures, which were put in place to allow the emergency services to respond and for us to investigate this incident.”
