Weekend Sport Preview

The Dorset & Wilts County Senior Men’s Rugby team play their final Bill Beaumont County Championship pool game against Surrey at Bestwall Park, Wareham on Saturday, with the game kicking off at 2:30 PM.

The Twin Counties’ record reads: Played 2, won 2, points for 94, points against 47. If they can overcome the challenge of Surrey, they should secure a home venue for the semifinal.

Weymouth & Portland open side wing forward James Newsam is unavailable to play this weekend and is replaced in the starting lineup by Ed Hendy; however, the Seahorses’ Reece Makin starts on the wing.

The Dorset League Cricket fixtures this weekend have gifted Dorchester a home Premier League game against Bere Regis, while in Premier Division 2, Martinstown visit Marnhull, and in Dorset League Division 1, Weymouth also have a home match against Broadstone at Redlands.

This weekend, spectators will be able to enjoy top-level gig racing, as the Weymouth Regatta takes place on Saturday, 31st May and Sunday, 1st June.

On Saturday, a national-level championship hosted by Weymouth Rowing Club in collaboration with the Cornish Pilot Gig Association is coming to Newtons Cove and can be viewed from a live site on the Nothe Gardens. This event will see over 600 rowers battle it out in the Mixed Grand Prix, with the opening qualifying round starting at 9am.

On Sunday, there will be racing from men’s, ladies and junior crews with clubs from the local Jurassic League and other top clubs competing to win the Tristan Johnson Cup.

Weymouth Regatta committee chairman Liam Patton said “Providing the weather is with us, I believe we will be in for the most exciting two days of racing I think Weymouth will have ever hosted. Coming off the recent World Pilot Gig Championship, this is the ideal test for clubs to mix ups their crews in very different waters. We’re also very excited to be welcoming the international guests.”
