Hundreds turn out to pay their respects to former Weymouth pub landlord

Idris Martin reporting.

The funeral of “legendary” pub landlord John ‘Sooty’ Stockley took place today (3rd July), with his cortege passing along Weymouth Esplanade for people to pay their respects.

Friends of Sooty turned out in their hundreds including the crew of the Weymouth Lifeboat who lined up on the gantry in Custom House Quay as the cortege passed by.

Sooty was the landlord at the Globe public house on Mitchell Street in the 1960s and a chimney sweep in the town for many years.

A private family service was held at Weymouth Crematorium due to limited space, with the service live-streamed directly to Weymouth Pavilion Ball Room.

After the service, the family joined those attending in the Pavilion for the wake.
