Weekend Sports Report

Weymouth manager Warren Feeney took his charges across the causeway to lock horns with Portland United in the Terras’ first pre-season match, and he returned following an entertaining encounter that could never be described as a friendly with a four-goal to two victory.

Feeney named five trialists in his starting lineup, and one of them did his chances of obtaining a contract at the Bob Lucas Stadium no harm at all, netting twice in the first half.

Jake McCarthy opened the scoring for the visitors, then the “Trialist” netted his opener before the Blues had the Terras’ recent signing, goalkeeper Ben Clark, picking the ball out of the net following a drive from the corner of the penalty area from Remus Nixon.

With half time beckoning, the “Trialist” scored his second to make the score Portland 1, Weymouth 3 at the break.

Neither side managed to gain the upper hand in the second period, and it was mostly end-to-end play, that was until Archie Woolford managed to narrow the deficit to one with the Blues’ second strike.

However, Feeney had dealt his ace and substitute striker Brandon Goodship stroked the ball into the far corner of the net to make the final score Portland United 2, Weymouth 4.
