Christmas Day Sports Report with audio

Over 590 participants, some serious and others just out for some exercise, attended Weymouth’s Christmas Day Park Run in the glorious winter sunshine. Starting at 9:00am on Preston Beach Wall the runners and walkers headed out towards the Oasis Café then back along the Esplanade towards the Jubilee Clock with the finish line situated opposite the Sea Life Centre.

One Egdon Heath runner, Ian Martin said, “It was well worth getting out of bed early on Christmas Day despite the cold conditions and I think everybody who took part enjoyed it, I certainly did”.

The annual Weymouth Lions’ Club Harbour Swim had a delayed start due to a medical emergency in the crowd but went ahead with the experienced swimmers first into the water.

First out of the water was 38-year-old Jake Sorbie from Weymouth who came second last year and was determined to do one better in 2025.

One father and son duo also took part were 10-year-old Bodie Weedon and his dad Chris. Bodie who is a member of Weymouth Surf Life Saving Club said, “It was fun and I enjoyed it”. Chris added, “I am really proud of Bodie. We both went into shock when we hit the water as did everyone else out there today, but he is a good swimmer”.

After the first heat the organisers decided that with the water temperature of just 7 degrees, the strong current and freezing wind it was too risky to continue with the event and cancelled all further heats due to safety concerns.
