Water site demolition in Dorchester

by Trevor Bevins, Local Democracy Reporting Service.

It’s not the job most people would like to undertake – but someone has to.

The Dorchester Water Recycling Centre in St Georges Road is to demolish a storage barn and sludge storage building.

It is likely to be messy and potentuially smelly job with the risks of asbestos which will have to be dealt with and safely disposed of.

Wessex Water say both buildings, which between them amount to around 5,700 cubic metres, are no longer required – and that removing them will improve the site’s operational efficiency.

Work could soon be underway at the site, which is on the road to the town’s tip, now that Dorset Council has raised no objections.

Wessex Water say the demolition will be carried out one section at a time, with the manual removal of asbestos sheeting, which will be double bagged and sealed and disposed of at a licenced facility.

Once the asbestos is gone the rest of the buildings will be removed mechanically with a 360 excavator and pulveriser.

The smaller sludge storage building will see a similar operation with the cement fire roof removed and wrapped and disposed of a licensed facility and the walls then removed with the same excavator and pulveriser.

The asbestos from the site will be suitably bagged, taped and stored in hazardous waste skips ready for transportation to a licensed waste facility; the timber and concrete will be stored in waste skips for transportation back to a licensed waste facility with all steel transported off site to a recycling centre. All other wastes will be segregated as required.
