WEYMOUTH harbour master Ed Carter has welcome news that the iQFoil world championships will be held in the area during early September.
The event will include a ‘village’ venue set up by the Pavilion on September 12 for the final race which will decide the world champion.
Alongside that will be events, to be organised by the Royal Yachting Association, for both sailing and windsurfing.
Mr Carter told the Dorset Council harbours committee that it will be the first time the UK will have hosted an Olympic windsurf championship since 2009.
Most of the racing, from September 4th, will be based at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy.
Said Mr Carter: “we are very happy to welcome them and looking forward to continuing to work with these sorts of event in the future.”
Other harbourside events planned for the coming year include the return of a free to enter Weymouth Seafood Festival, from 4-5 July on harbourside; a visit from the Waverley paddle steamer at the end of the summer, the date yet to be confirmed, and the annual Ironman and Beach Motorcross events in the autumn.
Mr Carter said there would be a new attraction for the town in the summer months – the Dorset Artisan Market, which is already held in Dorchester and September – which will open once a month on Fridays in June, July and August to take place on the Cargo Stage and Weymouth Quayside.
