To celebrate the 180th birthday of Dorchester’s greatest literary son the people of the county town have created a video in tribute. Follow the link below to watch the video.
Also, the organisers of the Thomas Hardy Victorian Fair have announced that the event will return on Sunday 6th June 2021.
The organisers say:
“Thomas Hardy himself would have understood that the original event planned to celebrate his 180th birthday needed to be rolled forward, having lived himself through several pandemics, including cholera, typhus and tuberculosis.
“The THVF organisers are very much aware that everyone’s focus has to be on public health and safety to ensure we beat coronavirus and stop the spread.
“Moving the event to next year was felt to be the most sensible option as public confidence in attending large events should certainly be regained by then and we can give the Thomas Hardy Victorian Fair the platform it deserves.”

“So many people and organisations became involved with this video project, The New Hardy Players, Musicians of Tatterdamalion, and The Thomas Hardy Society to name just three. Actors and academics cooperated at safe distance to help create a truly excellent way to pay respects to Dorchester’s famous writer and poet on the 180th anniversary of his birth in June 2nd 1840. Local heritage is something to celebrate and KeeP 106 community radio strives to do this whenever it is possible. The video is a substitute for the now delayed until 2021 fair to celebrate all things good about Dorchester.
“We will as before broadcast live from the heart of the town and speak with as many contributors as possible during the next Thomas Hardy Victorian Fair. We look forward to seeing you there.”
