Weymouth man arrested on suspicion of sexual assault

Officers investigating a reported sexual assault in Weymouth are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward – with a man being arrested.

The incident happened at around 3.30am on Sunday 18 December 2022 when the victim, a 19-year-old local woman, was standing in Maiden Street opposite the Picknics sandwich shop. She was approached from behind by a man who then touched her inappropriately.

Following enquiries by officers, a 37-year-old man from Weymouth was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and released on police bail.

Police Constable Jena Killingback, of Weymouth police, said: “I am appealing for witnesses to the incident to please contact us.

“In particular, we would like to identify a group of three passers-by who gave assistance to the young woman who approached them for help.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk/contact or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55220203080. Alternatively, independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously online at Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling Freephone 0800 555 111.
