Weekend Sports Report

Weymouth Football Club’s senior men’s team travelled into Essex to play promotion chasing Braintree on Saturday and managed to return to Dorset with a National League South point.

The hosts went down to 10 men in the 53rd minute of the game when Alf Pavey was shown the red card for a reckless challenge on the Terras Tom Blair however the Terras failed to make the extra man count and the match remained goalless.

Weymouth’s next game is on Tuesday evening at the Bob Lucas Stadium against Hungerford.

Dorchester were also on the road, and they travelled to Bracknell. The Magpies lost the game by 2 goals to nil making that 7 defeats in their last 9 Southern League outings.

Charlie Gunson went close to open the scoring early doors, but it was not to be, and it was another fruitless trip for Dorchester who returned to the Avenue Stadium with nothing to show for all of their efforts.

Dorchester’s next game is at the Avenue Stadium on Tuesday evening against Beaconsfield Town.

There is some good local football news, in the Wessex League where at Grove Corner Portland beat visitors from across the Solent Cowes Sports by 4 goals to 2.

The Blues hero was Greg Borthwick who netted a hat trick with Brin Doyle adding the 4th goal.

Bridport also recorded a victory at St Mary’s over visitors Teignmouth, Fred Parsons struck the back of the visitor’s net twice with Riley Weedon scoring the Bee’s 3rd goal and no reply from the visitors.

In the local rugby Dorchester went down by 17 points to 21 at Coburg Road against Avonvale, Swanage & Wareham were narrowly beaten at Bestwall by Yeovil by 18 points 20 and Blandford failed to raise a team to travel to play Tribute Southern Counties South League leaders Wimborne.

In Tribute Dorset & Wilts Division 1 South Champions Weymouth & Portland were denied an end of league season celebration when East Dorset Dockers cried off mid-week citing players attending the England France game at Twickenham, I hope they enjoyed their day out, but I very much doubt it, Lytchett Minster beat visitors Swanage & Wareham Extra First xv by 33 points to 24, Oakmeadians overcame the challenge of Puddletown winning that game by 34 points to 5 and Bridport lost on the road at Wimborne against the Don’s second team by 22 points to 15.

A football result from Sunday,

Poole Town U18s 3 Dorchester U18s 4.

Goals from Lewis Toms (x2), Remus Nixon and Harvey Sivell, with keeper Max Loder also saving a penalty at the other end, the ||Magpies U18s are now through to the final of the Dorset Youth Cup.
