Dorset Council advises that the dates for rubbish and recycling collections will change for Christmas and the new year. See below for the revised timetable.
As well as your collection date changing over the Christmas period, the crews might pick up your waste at a different time of day than usual. Therefore, you are asked to put your containers out on the correct day by 6am to ensure collection.
There are no garden waste collections between Monday 25 December and Friday 5 January.
If you have extra recycling that won’t fit in your bin, you can put it in a sturdy box of your own – that can be lifted by one person – and put it by the side of your recycling bin. Please put paper and card in your bin to ensure it doesn’t get wet.
You can also put out two extra sacks of black bin rubbish on your first scheduled rubbish collection after Christmas.
Recycling at Christmas
There are lots of items that you can recycle at Christmas time:
- All cooked and uncooked food waste (including turkey bones)
- Christmas cards. No glitter please
- Wrapping paper. No glitter, bows or ribbons please. Scrunch your wrapping paper! If it stays scrunched, it can be recycled. If it doesn’t, or it’s foil-based, it should go in your rubbish bin (or reused)
- Glass bottles and jars. Metal lids can go back on the containers. Please keep glass separate from other materials using your glass box
- Batteries. Please take to a retail collection point, a Household Recycling Centre, or put in a small bag and leave on top of your recycling bin or food bin. Please don’t put batteries in your bins as they can cause vehicle fires. If your battery bag is lost, you can request a new one
- Food and drinks cans
- Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays.
To recycle bulky items, Household Recycling Centres will be open 9am to 4pm every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Please recycle your glass early
If possible, please help your crew out by putting your glass out for collection in the run-up to Christmas, even if it isn’t full. This will free up space for extra glass at Christmas time and hopefully ensure that your box isn’t overfull or too heavy. If your box is broken or lost, you can request new one.
What to do with your real Christmas tree
There are lots of things you can do with your Christmas tree once you’ve finished with it:
- You can chop it up and put it in your garden waste bin
- You can take it to your local Household Recycling Centre, free of charge
- You can order a collection from a local charity. (They get booked up quickly, so it’s best to do this early!)
- You can find even more suggestions at the RHS website. Please do not put your Christmas tree by the side of your bin as it will not be collected.
