Weekend Sports Report

Weymouth Football Club’s senior men’s team returned from Essex with nothing to show for their exploits, losing the National League South game at Hornchurch by a solitary goal to nil, bringing the Terras eight game unbeaten run to an abrupt end.

Our Man at the Match said: “The Terras were a goal down at the break. However, they had squandered a few good chances. Early in the second half, Weymouth had to clear the ball off their own goal line, and despite both teams having chances, neither side managed to convert them, and there remained no further scoring.”

Dorchester conceded mid-way through the first half through Taunton striker Owen Brain, who latched on to a cross from the right and lashed the ball past Gerard Benfield into the back of the Magpies net.

Then, minutes later, the visitors brought down a Dorchester player 25 meters out and to the right of the goal. Up stepped wing back Marcus Daws, who struck his free-kick wide of the defensive wall and curled it inside the Taunton post, leaving goalkeeper Josh Gould groping at thin air.

During the second-half Storm Bert made his presence felt, and both sides seemed to resort to long ball tactics. Then the game just drifted towards the final whistle, with the final score of Dorchester 1 Taunton Town 1, with both teams sharing the Southern Premier League points.

In the Wessex Premier League, Portland United returned to winning ways, beating Blackfield & Langley by 3 goals to 2 at Gang Warily.

The Blues’ goals coming from Pat Jenkins with a pair and Brinley Doyle.

Bridport’s Football Club’s matches against Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police, Wimborne Town Reserves and the Lady’s match against Swanage & Herston were postponed due to waterlogged pitches on Sunday.

One women’s match that did go ahead on Sunday was Weymouth Women’s Development’s match away against Bournemouth Manor. The Terras Ladies returned to the Bob Lucas Stadium with a 3-all draw. Ace striker Emily Screen netted all of the Terras’ goals.

In the local rugby, Weymouth & Portland’s women beat their Poole counterparts by 20 points to 15 away.
