One World Festival returns to Dorchester

Dorset One World Festival is back once again to celebrate the diversity of cultures in Dorset through world music, dance, food, and activities.

This free event will be held on Saturday 9th August from 11am-4pm at the Borough Gardens in Dorchester and will feature a programme of traditional and modern music involving our local communities. Come and marvel to a beautiful display of flamenco with Salud Botella and learn some steps yourself, listen to wonderful traditional songs from Ukraine, enjoy the sounds of traditional Syrian and Kurdish song, and get your dancing shoes on with Angie A and the Four Corners Collectif who will be providing smooth soul, funky reggae and afrobeat inspired tunes. You can also watch and even join with some fabulous African dancing courtesy of Cheikh Diop and the afternoon will be topped off by Gugge 2000 – a Swiss carnival band who never fail to bring a smile.

The Global Food Village will offer a wide selection of mouthwatering fresh food and drinks from around the world.

Come and taste some incredible cuisine, from Tibetan dumplings and Middle Eastern falafel to appetising Thai food, authentic Asian curries, South American burritos, Italian pizza, Afro-Caribbean jerk chicken, and more! You can finish your meal with some delectable baklava and wash it all down with a drink from the bar.

As well as music and food, the event will feature a wide range of stalls and additional activities to get involved with, including crafts, henna painting, fermentation workshops and a free bouncy castle for the children.

And this year there is an opportunity to get involved with the first Fusion Dorset Apple Cake Bake-off! A fun way to reimagine a local classic and show off your baking flair. Take the classic Dorset Apple Cake and make it your own – add spice, swap ingredients, or give it a twist no one saw coming!

Whether it’s a traditional family recipe or a creative fusion, we want to taste your unique take on this classic bake. Bring your cake on the day on a paper plate with your name and phone number written on the reverse. Register and drop off your cake before 12.30pm – head for the Dorset National Landscape gazebo. Maggie Richardson (The Seaside Baker) and a contestant on the Great British Bake off – will be tasting each entry, along with other judges specially chosen for this delicious task!

“We hope that residents and visitors come and enjoy the festival and experience a fun, friendly and culturally enriching day” said Mona Elkotory, Chair of the South West Dorset Multicultural Network

The event is being organised by the South West Dorset Multicultural Network and Dorchester Town Council and has been kindly sponsored by Dorset Council, the Casterbridge Rotary Club, The Poundbury Community Trust, Dorchester Town Council and the South West Dorset Multicultural Network.
