Weekend Sports Report

Portland United crashed out of this season’s FA Cup competition at the first hurdle.

Going into the final minutes of the second half the Blues were trailing by 3 goals to nil; however, their prolific striker Remus Nixon broke Portland’s duck to make the final score Hythe & Dibden 3 vs Portland United 1.

Bridport couldn’t present their new chairman Chris Tozer with 3 league points at home against Crediton in the Bees’ opening Southwest Peninsular East League fixture of the new season.

Will Collins opened the scoring for Crediton with a goal in the 14th minute.

Bridport knocked on the door a couple of time before Man of the Match Harley Brook kicked it wide open when he forced the ball across the visitor’s goal line following a cross from the right to level the score at the break.

Both sides went close in the second period, but neither could add to their first half tally and the score remained Bridport 1 Crediton 1 and the league points were shared.

Dorchester beat their guests Exmouth Town by 2 goals to nil at the Avenue Stadium, both goals scored by Joe Parker and Weymouth went down at the Bob Lucas Stadium, beaten by 5 goals to 1 by National League South full timers Torquay United, both in pre-season friendly fixtures.

In the Dorset League Cricket League Premier Division, Dorchester lost by 110 runs at Wimborne and Bere Regis also lost at home against Sherborne by 66 runs.

In Premier 2, Blandford were beaten by Chalke Valley by 10 wickets and Martinstown won at Swanage by 4 wickets.

In County Division 1’s local derby,  Weymouth crossed the Causeway to play neighbours Portland Red Triangle at St. George’s and returned with a 6-wicket victory in the bank.

Annie Redding has been appointed as Weymouth Football Club’s Women’s team captain next season.

The National Surf Life Saving Championships are being staged on Weymouth Beach starting on Saturday August the 2nd through until Saturday August the 9th.

Thirty clubs from as far afield as Cornwall the Scotland are taking part.

Teams range from Nippers 8- to 13-year-olds to Masters where there are some competitors in their 70’s.
