Broadmayne first school near Dorchester is one of the only first schools in the area lucky enough to have an outdoor, heated swimming pool. In fact, the school motto is ‘every child a swimmer’ as it is the ambition of teachers and parents that no child leaves Broadmayne having not learned to swim.
Pupils at the school swim three times a week during the summer term and the pool is opened up to the community during the summer holidays, providing a fantastic facility for everyone to enjoy.
However, the swimming pool, which was originally opened by villagers and special guests, Harry Corbett and Sooty in the 1970s, is in desperate need of renovation. As well as setting up a crowdfunding page, the school PTA – Friends At Broadmayne (FABs) entered the school into the Aviva Community Fund competition to win £25k to renovate and repair the pool and its facilities.
So far, the school has received over 4000 votes but still needs many more to be in with a chance of winning the money.
Jude Baker, member of the Friends At Broadmayne (FABs) said:
“We really need people to log on to the Aviva Community Fund webpage and get voting for Broadmayne First School. The swimming pool is such a great asset for our pupils and the local community, but without funding we can’t afford to maintain the pool for much longer. If we don’t make the repairs and give it the long overdue TLC it requires there is a real risk that the pool will have to close.
