Weekend Sports Preview

Wessex Premier League side Portland United FC and Western League Club Sturminster Newton FC take pride of place this weekend as the 2 Dorset clubs meet at Grove Corner on Saturday for a FA Trophy second round tie.

Neither side have ever reached the third round before so which ever club emerges victorious history will be made.

Playing at home and competing in step 5 of the English National League the Blues must start as big favourites to progress into round 3 but team Cherries who play in step 6 will be up for this one and in a knock out tie anything can happen.

Portland were first established in 1902 with a side made up mostly of Prison Officers from the Island while the Sturminster Newton were first first recorded back in 1874 although they played their matches in Blandford.

There are two Southern Premier League matches on Saturday, Weymouth travel to the Embridge Sports Ground to play Walton & Hersham while at the Avenue Stadium Dorchester host Chertsey.

The Sham currently sit on top of the league table so the Terras’ manager Steve Claridge will hoping that his team can raise their game and return to Dorset with at least 1 point and the Magpies manager Tom Killick could see his team move out of the relegation zone if they can beat the 12th placed Curfews.

In the Dorset Premier League Bridport Reserves travel to play Holt United.

On Sunday Weymouth’s women’s team visit Wells, Bridport women are away against Pen Mill women and Dorchester’s ladies’s team are away at Longfleet.
