Weekend Sports Report

FA Vase Second Round Tie, at Grove Corner.

A minutes silence was observed before the kick as a trumpeter played the Last Post.

Result after 90 minutes, Portland United 0 vs Sturminster Newton 0.

Sturminster Newton win on penalties.

The name Theo Crane will live long in the local football folk law, the Sturminster Newton custodian made two spectacular first half saves to keep his team in the game and then in the penalty shootout after the match had remained goal less Crane made history saving two more to put his club into the third round draw for the first time since their formation in 1874.

Portland had much the best of the first half and only Crane’s display ensured that the two teams turned around on level terms then after the break the Blues took control and produced most of the quality football constantly peppering the Cherries’ goal, but the defence in front of Crane held firm defending a succession of corners and constant pressure from the Portland attack.

When the referee blew after 90 minutes it went straight to penalties and the rest is history.

Our Man at the Match, said “Portland had much the better of the game possession wise and shots on target, but they just couldn’t beat the Sturminster goalkeeper who was in tremendous form and he well deserved the Man of the Match award that he was presented with after the game”.

Now Sturminster go into the hat for next week’s the third-round draw.
