Young people across Dorset are being asked: Could you make a difference?
Applications are now open for 11 – 18-year-olds to become Members of Youth Parliament.
The Expression of Interest is open for young people in the county to apply for one of four posts in which they will represent Dorset in the UK Youth Parliament.
Each year Dorset’s young people elect:
* 2 members of UK Youth Parliament (MYP) * 2 deputy members of Youth Parliament (DMYP)
These members represent Dorset nationally. They attend national events throughout the year including:
* the UK Youth Parliament’s annual sitting * the annual House of Commons debate
Current MYP Stasia said: “If you’re passionate about changing things in your area and you have this chance to, why not go for it? It’s an amazing experience to make a difference and change the lives of children and young people in Dorset.
“Youth Parliament has really boosted my confidence in public speaking and speaking out about what I think is wrong. Applying is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
Deputy MYP Matthew added: “It’s an opportunity that gives you the chance to take something you see that’s wrong and try to make it right.”
The voting process is managed by Dorset County Council. Andrew Parry, Cabinet member for education, learning and skills said:
“Encouraging an interest from Dorset students in the work of the Youth Parliament is a great way for them to gain an insight into how our democracy works and an understanding of the importance of it in everyday life.”
The wider role of the MYPs is to represent Dorset on a regional and national basis, and help engage young people in politics, democracy and citizenship. They will also deliver their own personal manifestos to help improve the lives of young people.
