Sport Extra – West Dorset Indoor Cricket League report

Weymouth 155-2 beat Martinstown 150 by four wickets.

Weymouth clinched the West Dorset Indoor League Division One crown with a perfect record following a four-wicket win over Martinstown in the final at Redlands.

Having finished top of the group after victories over Dorchester, Portland, Charlton Down, Bere Regis and Martinstown, Weymouth faced a showdown with second-placed Martinstown to decide the destiny of the title.

Martinstown drew first blood by winning the toss and electing to bat first but Weymouth bowled tightly up top in response.

Former Town seamer David Trotter was in superb form, snaring 2-24 from his three overs including a rare maiden, and his haul included the wickets of Finlay Williams (0) and Theo Savva (12).

Left-arm paceman Lloyd Beals (0-24), making his competitive return just four months after ACL surgery, also helped restrict the flow of runs early on.

Martinstown captain Henry Lewis played fluently to glue the Town innings together and solid contributions from Jadan Gerety (31), Noah Carter (22) and Tom Edwards (21) got them back in the game.

Adam Hoyes (1-45) and Neil Walton (1-53) took a wicket apiece, but Lewis returned to chalk up a classy 54 before two run outs halted the visitors’ innings on 150.

Weymouth’s strong batting line-up ate quickly into the 151 target as both Walton and Jack Sapsworth (28no) retired.

Beals (16) scored with ease until a leading edge looped kindly for Edwards off the bowling of Savva (1-41), but Weymouth banked another rapid retirement when two sixes helped Adam Hoyes to 28 not out.

Although Trotter (12) was ousted by leg-spinner Gerety (1-41), Cory Baker (12no) batted well alongside the returning Walton (48no) as Weymouth closed in on victory.

The win was confirmed when Walton hit a Carter short ball for six as the hosts cruised home with 17 balls remaining.

“It’s really satisfying to win the title while going unbeaten and gives us a huge confidence boost before the outdoor season. Full credit to the lads,” stand-in skipper Walton said.

“Everyone who played has contributed and even when we didn’t bowl or bat particularly well, we still found a way to win – especially the games against Dorchester, Portland and Bere Regis.

“That bodes well for our first red-ball match next month.

“Overall, the lads who’ve played have been excellent and they’re taking responsibility for improving their games and fitness levels by playing these indoor fixtures.

“It’s ideal match preparation going into the league campaign, so it’s been a really valuable winter.

“Thanks also to league organisers Phil Titterington and Simon Pengelly for getting the games on.”

Elsewhere, Charlton Down wrapped up the Division Two title with a commanding five-wicket win over Abbotsbury.
