Dorchester Town Crier is National Champion

Dorchester Town Crier wins National Championships for 10th time!

Dorchester’s well-known Town Crier, Alistair Chisholm has won the Town Crying National Championships for the 10th time – equalling the record set in 1973 by Ben Johnson, who was Town Crier of Fowey, Cornwall from 1935 to 1978.

Listen to our interview with Alistair in which he repeats his winning cry

The Town Criers’ National Championships are held each year in Hastings, where on Saturday 19 October Alistair competed in two rounds, one giving his ‘home cry’ extolling the virtues of Dorchester and the second on the given subject of the anniversary of VE Day.

Alistair Chisholm said “When you have a town like Dorchester to cry about, how can you fail? I’m delighted to tell the world about this place and so pleased to have won.” Dorchester’s Mayor, Richard Biggs, said it was a tremendous achievement.

Alistair, who has been Town Crier of Dorchester since 1997, first won the competition in 1998. Second and third places went to Kurt de Smet, Town Crier of Oudenaard (Hastings’ twin town in Belgium) and Eliza Mowe of Barnoldswick
