Dorset Libraries helping with Children’s Mental Health Week

It’s Children’s Mental Health Week and Dorset Libraries are promoting Reading Well for Children, a new reading list to support children’s mental health and well-being.

Reading Well for Children, created by The Reading Agency, is a list of 33 titles aimed at children aged 7 – 11.

The books provide advice and stories to support children’s mental health and well-being. All the titles have been selected and endorsed by health experts, children and families.

The books cover a wide range of reading levels  and can be read with siblings and carers to support less confident readers.

Cllr Anthony Alford, Dorset Council Portfolio Holder for Customer, Community and Regulatory Services said:

“We’re delighted to be working with The Reading Agency to promote Reading Well for children.

“Looking after your mental health is important whatever your age and the books on this list have been carefully chosen to help children tackle some of life’s big challenges.

“Look out for leaflets promoting the scheme in our libraries or ask one of our friendly librarians if you would like know more.”

More about Reading Well

Since launching,  Reading Well has helped 1.2 million people to borrow 2.3 million books from public libraries.

Reading Well helps people to understand and manage their health and well-being. The lists show-case books endorsed by health professionals on a range of common health problems. There are four reading lists aimed at adults and young people.

Books can be recommended by health professionals, or accessed by visiting your local library. All titles can be requested from the Libraries West catalogue.
