Appeal for information following dog bite incident in Weymouth

Officers are appealing for information after a man was bitten by a dog in Weymouth.

The incident occurred at around 5pm on Monday 25 January 2021 in St Thomas Street. The victim, a man aged in his 80s who is partially sighted, was walking to the Post Office when he saw a man with a dog that was wearing a harness. As they approached each other, the dog bit his hand, causing it to bleed.

The victim was then approached by a woman who said that the same dog had also just bitten her.

A short time later he saw the same man sitting on the steps by the beach and approached him. He told the man that his dog had bitten him but did not get the man’s details.

The dog owner is described as white, around five feet nine inches tall and well-built with grey hair. He wore dark glasses, spoke with a local accent and walked with a white stick.

The dog, believed to have been an assistance dog, is described as light-coloured and medium-sized but not the usual Labrador-type that typically assist visually impaired people.

Police Constable Jennie Sykes-Martin, of Dorset Police, said: “We are carrying out enquiries into this incident and I am keen to speak to the dog owner involved so we can take his account.

“I would urge him to come forward or anyone with information as to his identity to please contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk, via email 101@dorset.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55210015800. Alternatively, to stay 100 per cent anonymous, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers online at Crimestoppers-uk.org or call Freephone 0800 555 111.
